Motherboards with Fake Cache
- Computer Shopper (April 96)

"It seems that someone in the Far East is deliberately making motherboards with fake cache as some victims report the BIOS has been altered to incorrectly report 256K of cache. A variant of this practice is to fit only 128K of real cache and then cover the real and fake cache chips with a label that says 'Warranty Void if Removed'. A lot of these firms are the same ones who overclock a CPU and sell it as a higher-rated processor, again using those 'Warranty Void if Removed' labels to hide the real chip markings. Note than an AMI BIOS does NOT make this an AMI board." "...I would not rely on just one diagnostic tool to conclude that your cache is fake, as there may be many reasons for diagnostic software not to recognise a feature or incorrectly report cache size. One diagnostic program that identifies Level 2 cache is Pc-Check® from Eurosoft."
