| Another widespread date problem 2038 |
|
How Pc-Check protects against the problem:
Pc-Check does not perform calculations that might cause
overflow representations - the longest calculations using the
format are in calculating duration of a single run of a burn-in tests. In the next 30 years, Pc-Check will evolve to use 64 bit and
eventually completely new standards for such calculations! In the
mean time, the possibility for incorrect dates due to entry or
malfunction should not cause unpredictable results from the
diagnostic. Initialisation code has been added to the program that
will set all system dates to January 1st , 2037 (over a year ahead of
the problem date) if that date has been exceeded on the system
and so is clearly incorrectly set. This is done using a different,
field driven call method not dependant on the time_t representation.
In the next full release of Pc-Check, the date normalisation function
will be changed to also trap years that are less than 1970 and bring
them to January 1st, 1970 and so within range of the time_t
calculations. Again, Pc-Check will have evolved considerably before
such a date becomes a present day worry.
QA+Win32 Test Derivatives & PC Builder Test
Management framework:
While the QA+Win32 test base code (I97) and PC Builder Test Management
Framework uses 32-bit "time_t" values and function calls in a few places, the
operating system would be the first point of date use before the diagnostics
got underway. Well before 2038, the test base code will be an entirely 64-bit
(or perhaps even 128-bit) operating system by then.

| Microsoft will be
extending the WinPE reboot time |
|
Microsoft will be
extending the WinPE reboot time
from every 24 hours to 72 hours.
The daily security reboot has
been an issue for PC manufacturers
and was raised on many occasions
with Microsoft. Microsoft has responded
to the manufacturers and a version, WinPE 2,
that boots every 72 hours will be released
with Vista, scheduled for release at the end
of 2006. In the meantime, the Microsoft WinPE
Notice will remain as follows:
"The Microsoft® Windows®
Preinstallation Environment software
included with this device or software
may be used for boot, diagnostic, setup,
restoration, installation, configuration,
test or disaster recovery purposes only.
NOTE: THIS SOFTWARE CONTAINS A SECURITY
FEATURE THAT WILL CAUSE END USER'S SYSTEMS
TO REBOOT WITHOUT PRIOR NOTIFICATION TO THE
END USER AFTER 24 HOURS OF CONTINUOUS USE."
